When we look at our communities, it is remarkably very easy to spot spiritual drifting, personal and corporate emotional exhaustion, and so much deep fragmentation in our social environments. Yet, the Gospel demands that we look upon the lost not with frustration, judgement, or fear, but with the same fierce, tender empathy that Christ shows to us; Matthew 9:36. Jesus recognizes that those who wander are not the enemy to be fought, but casualties of a broken world who are desperately searching for a home they cannot find on their own. God's compassion is never passive; it is aggressive, intentional pursuit of love.

In Luke 15:4, Jesus asks, "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?" When the shepherd finds the wanderer, he joyfully places it on his shoulders and carries it home. As a church family, our mission is to mirror this active rescue by stepping out of our comfort zones and into the messy, painful spaces where people are hurting, carrying them with grace rather than condemning their confusion.

Recognizing that we were once not long ago just as blind and helpless obliterates any sense of spiritual superiority and transforms our witness from "look at how righteous we are" to "look at how merciful God is." This week, let us answer Christ's call in Matthew 9:38 to pray for the harvest and actively become the workers who seek out the lonely, protect the vulnerable, and welcome the weary back to the table of grace.
